Description
Between 1956 and 1971, the clifftops above the Needles hosted one of Britain’s most significant and least known contributions to the space race. High Down was a rocket test facility where the Black Arrow programme was developed, culminating in October 1971 when Britain became only the sixth nation to place a domestically-built satellite into orbit. The programme was cancelled the same week it succeeded.
The site is now a National Trust cliff-top walk. The concrete test stands remain, repurposed as viewing platforms across the Solent and Channel
